The Legend of the Nine-Colored Deer

Nine-Colored Deer Necklace is inspired by the ancient Dunhuang mural “The Buddha’s Nine-Colored Deer Sutra,” which tells the story of a previous life of the Buddha, where he was born as a nine-colored deer before attaining enlightenment. In this life, the Buddha was the king of the nine-colored deer, with a magnificent five-colored coat, slender legs, and antlers as white as snow.

The Deer’s Act of Compassion

One day, while the Nine-Colored Deer was passing by a river, he saw someone drowning. Without hesitation, the deer rescued the person from the water. The rescued individual immediately knelt and thanked the deer, offering to repay him. However, the Nine-Colored Deer responded, “There is no need. Just promise me that if anyone asks about me, you will say you have never seen me.”

Royal Reward

In the royal palace, the queen had a dream of the beautiful Nine-Colored Deer. Moved by the dream, she implored the king to capture the deer and use its beautiful fur to make a seat cushion. Captivated by her request, the king offered a large reward to anyone who could bring the deer to him.

Betrayal for Greed

Tempted by greed, the drowning man gave in to his evil thoughts and reported the location of the Nine-Colored Deer to the king. The king, along with his entourage, set out on horseback and by carriage to search for the Nine-Colored Deer. They eventually found the deer by the riverbank.

King’s Decree

The Nine-Colored Deer remained calm and spoke to the king, saying, “I saved the drowning man at the risk of my life, yet he has betrayed me.” Moved by the deer’s wisdom and selflessness, the king issued a decree forbidding the harming of Nine-Colored Deer within his kingdom from that day forward.
